The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 was enacted to ensure workers have a safe and healthy work environment, leading to the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.151 specifically addresses emergency eyewash and shower requirements, stating that “...where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use.”

To maintain consistent manufacturing standards, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established guidelines for emergency equipment performance. The current standard, ANSI Z358.1-2014, outlines the requirements for eyewash and shower units.
